Scent Swapping

I am in the process of laying some groundwork for the arrival of Charlie and Leo next week.

When I first visited them two months ago, I took a towel back they had been sitting on and showed that to Jack and Tom so they could get used to their smell. Today the breeder sent me through a little blanket and I have just left that on the floor for them to have a sniff. They seem to be interested so here’s hoping!

The idea is that because cats’ sense of smell is very powerful and part of their communication with other cats, that is the first thing they notice when meeting a new cat.

I have been advised by an expert to make sure I ‘swap scents’ with the new kittens and my Jack and Tom as soon as possible when they arrive so the kittens smell the same as them.

I hope it works!

I suspect either way I am going to get some sulking because of having the newbies in the house but I will make sure I don’t ‘favourite’ the new kittens and include Jack and Tom in playtimes and other activities.

I am picking them up next thurs and at least I will be putting them in my cat carrier from my house which should smell of me and Jack and Tom so that will help the process. I hope they don’t cry in the car. Jack and Tom are not too bad in the car when I have taken them to the vets but they do yowl a bit. I think they don’t like to motion of the car and not being able to see out where they are going.

I have loads of new toys to give to Charlie and Leo but I can’t get them out yet as Tom and Jack with claim them, so we will open them next weekend when they have settled in. It will be fun to see if they pick out any toy as their favourite. For more information about toys check out my product sections.

So wish me luck for next week!
