Ragdolls Are So Strange Sometimes

We got into a lovely routine after the first month or so and the boys got used to me going to work, popping back at lunch time to feed them and then finishing work and playing with them in the evening (and feeding them again twice) then they would come up to bed with me and either sleep on the landing, the ensuite bathroom, in the sink (yes really) and after about 6 months they started sleeping on my bed. Although, saying that, they didn’t always sleep on my bed it just seemed to be whatever mood they were in that day and how active they were. Sometimes they would stay down stairs for a while and run around and have little play. They were not usually noisy and it didn’t bother me. Quite often I would be woken up by Tom or Jack or both sitting next to my pillow purring in the middle of the night. I got used to it and just nodded off again listening to their beautiful happy purring.

I got them neutered at 6 months old (they need to be >2 kilos in weight, no problems with the amount they ate.) I would recommend getting your Ragdolls neutered if you are not going to breed from them as it is better for their health and reduces the potential for unwanted behaviours like spraying and aggression (not that I could imagine them being aggressive!)

They sailed through that fine and had no side-effects. Mummy was worried on the day and having to starve them for 12 hours prior was traumatic to say the least.

I don’t know whether it’s just my Raggies but they do develop some amusing behaviours as they get older some of which are a bit irritating. For example, they are so curious, more than the average cat. They cannot stand closed doors in the house so I have every room door open and I never have any privacy. As I said in a previous post, Tom even comes into the shower with me but once he gets a bit too wet he jumps out. Then he and Jack sit there patiently watching and waiting for me to come out. I can’t even close the shower door fully as they cry when I do that!

They also love to look in all the cupboards so when they are bored they scratch on the cupboard doors in the kitchen until I open them so they can have a look. I have also let them look in the dishwasher, the washing machine and the oven (not when it was on of course.)

They are forever following you from room to room watching what you are doing. I have nearly tripped over them many times and accidentally stepped on the tails especially as their tails got longer!

They learned how to get on the worktop when they were little (although they can’t do it now) and when it was dinner time (mine or theirs) they would jump on the work-top and shout at me until they got food. Of course I didn’t let them eat my food as it is not a good idea to let them get into that habit (note- there are some food stuffs which can make them sick like garlic so be careful.)

I quickly got used to having cat litter scattered about all the time as they are not good at covering their ‘business’ and they like to spend ages flicking litter everywhere and digging for England and scraping the sides with their paws, achieving nothing but mess in the process.

They also have their adorable behaviours which I love such as ‘chirruping’ to me and jumping on to the table while I am working and snuggling me, rubbing their heads against my cheek and wanting to be picked up and held like a baby (Tom likes this not Jack). They show their love and appreciation in so many ways and I lap it up so-to-speak.

Next time, I will chat about their first Christmas and birthday.
